Writer to Fighter: Week Five

February 26th, 2010

After closing the one month mark with a successful sparring session, I felt very confident going into week five. I made what I believe to be a classic mistake, by overestimating my abilities because of one exceptional performance. This is a mistake I will never make again… Read more »

On the Mic Weekly Blog:

February 20th, 2010
Hello Albuquerque!! Another week is in the books and another huge weekend awaits us in MMA and Boxing. I have to mention first that we have a huge guest that will be IN STUDIO with us for the On the Mic with Mike Adams Show this Saturday @ 11 a.m. None other than Tom Atencio himself. The outspoken and very successful head of Affliction Clothing will join us to talk about everything MMA. Tune into 610 The Sports Animal Saturday morning for this awesome interview.

There is a lot going on in fight world in the next few months; including Saturday’s UFC 110, WEC 47 on March 6th, UFC on Versus, and a show at Yankee Stadium that doesn’t involve baseball. Yankee Stadium will feature a great prize fight when Yuri Foreman takes on Miguel Cotto on June 5th. Boxing hasn’t been to The House That Ruth Built since 1976. It should be an amazing event!

UFC has their latest installment this Saturday with UFC 110. Albuquerque’s own Keith Jardine will step back into the Octagon to take on Ryan Bader. Bader’s only chance to win this fight will be to drag Keith to the ground and cause damage on the mat. Jardine’s superior striking will give him a distinct advantage on the feet but he must be wary of Bader’s wrestling. Ultimately, Jardine’s unorthodox style will lead him to a TKO over the former ASU wrestler. Another Albuquerque trained fighter will be tested Saturday when Joe “Daddy” Stevenson mixes it up with George Sotiropoulos. Sotiropoulos has a four fight win streak leading up to this fight but faces a steep jump in competition with Stevenson. Unfortunately, I see Stevenson planting the Aussie on his back and using his GNP and BJJ to earn a decision victory. Michael Bisping looks to make up for his KO loss to Dan Henderson by taking on the seemingly ageless Wanderlei Silva. Silva is moving down to the middleweight division again and a big part of the outcome of this fight will be how his body handles the cut. Bispings chin is obviously suspect but one would think he would be more cautious after his last outing. If Silva’s gas tank can last, I see him stalking the Brit and finishing the fight in the third round. In our main event of the evening, we have a fight specifically intended to shed some light on the pecking order in the heavyweight division. Young sensation Cain Velasquez throws his name into the possible title picture by trading leather with the former Pride and now UFC juggernaut, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Velasquez earned this shot by amassing a 7-0 record with wins over Jake O’Brien, Ben Rothwell, and Cheick Kongo but this will by far be the biggest challenge of his career. The deciding factor in this contest will be where the fight takes place. I believe Cain can win this fight by out-brawling, not out-boxing, the more seasoned Nogueira. Should this fight get to the mat, however, Big Nog will use superior submissions to make it a short night for Velasquez.

March has plenty to offer with WEC 47 and UFC on Versus. Cards headlined by Bowles, Cruz, Vera, and Jones give us much to look forward to in the upcoming weeks. Check by next week as we discuss all the results from UFC 110 and all the latest MMA and Boxing news. Big thanks to Round One Coronado Center for their continued support in all we do.

Writer to Fighter: Week Four

February 17th, 2010

To those reading this week’s post, I must begin by apologizing. Due to a laundry list of reasons, including an injury that I suffered in training, I did not post a Writer to Fighter update last week. I will do my best to ensure that this does not happen again.

Week Four:

I have officially entered the one month mark of my training. I finally feel a little more comfortable at San Jose, and I hit some big landmarks in weeks four and five.

The first significant change in my training camp came in the form of a new team member. Read more »

On the Mic Weekly Blog:

February 13th, 2010

The show is On the Mic with Mike Adams and I am your weekly blogger James Lindenmuth. As I contemplated what to discuss this week in our blog, my thoughts kept returning to two things: UFC 109, and the UFC’s first event with the Versus Network. The fights this weekend were entertaining and surprising but I find myself looking into the future for what I think is a very important event for the UFC brand name. Let’s get down to business!

UFC 109 –

I am a huge UFC fan and even I would not tell you that this last Saturday’s card was one of the most anticipated and drama packed I have ever seen. All things considered though, UFC 109 was well worth the dough. Frank Trigg’s second fight in his return to the UFC was as unimpressive as the first. Matt Serra ended the fight about halfway through the first round after a short feeling out process and a nice left-right combination. This should end the UFC’s latest experiment with “Twinkletoes.” A grinding, unsuccessful night is what awaited Dan Miller in his Saturday bout against Demian Maia. Recovering from his first round KO to Nate Marquardt, Maia used improved striking to win a fairly uneventful unanimous decision. The next fight of the evening featured once-title hopeful Mike Swick against Paulo Thiago. The same Thiago that shocked many fight fans with his dramatic knockout of Josh Koscheck. Thiago impressed fans with effective punch and kick combinations in the first round but was stifled by a late takedown by Swick. Despite landing his best punch of the fight in the second round, Swick gets hit with a counter that stuns him and allows Thiago to finish the fight with a second round choke. In what I thought was the most surprising outcome of the evening, Chael Sonnen used phenomenal wresting and GNP to earn a well deserved decision over our own Nate Marquardt. Marquardt fans thought that this was just another stepping stone towards a second title shot against Anderson Silva, but it now appears that the title shot may belong to Sonnen. The final event of the evening showed Randy Couture proving once again that age is just a number. While both fighters were well into their forties, Mark Coleman was the only who’s age appeared to really be an issue. No takedowns, no GNP, and a small gas tank were the eventual demise of Coleman. In the post fight presser, Dana White expressed a widely held opinion: Coleman’s time with the UFC is done.

UFC on Versus!!

March 21st. Broomfield, Colorado. The UFC makes it’s first appearance on a second free TV channel with their debut on the Versus Network. Brandon Vera takes on Jon “Bones” Jones in the main event of a STACKED fight card. Let me repeat, this fight card is STACKED. Dos Santos vs. Gonzaga, Congo vs. Buentello, and Ludwig vs. Fisher round out this awesome card. The globalization and spread of the UFC is in full swing as they introduce their brand to a whole new free TV audience. What a great opportunity for New Mexico fight fans this is. A short drive and an inexpensive ticket are all that stands between us all and an awesome UFC event. I had to check the card twice because it’s so good!! Make sure you check this one out whether it be on Versus or live in Broomfield.

This Saturday’s show (11am – 1pm, 610AM The Sports Animal) will feature an interview with former 5-time World Champion Johnny Tapia. We will discuss his decorated past as well as his upcoming return to the ring. We will also discuss all the latest boxing and MMA news. Make sure to listen this Saturday and also check out our blog next week!  I want to thank Round One in Coronado Center for being one of our biggest sponsors as well as NewMexicoCage.com for all the support. Fight fans, I’m out!!!

Ladies and Gentleman, what a weekend for combat sports!

This is my first blog for NewMexicoCage.com and I can’t think of a better time to start.  After an amazing night of boxing on Friday, fight fans were treated to a great night of Strikeforce fights on Saturday.  There were a few matchups that gave me pause but, overall, it was a good card.  More on that later . . . Diaz Calls Out GSP:

February 1st, 2010

After a win at Saturday night’s Strikeforce Event, Nick Diaz (21-7), wasted no time before calling out Team Jackson’s member Georges St. Pierre (19-2). “I want to fight St. Pierre,” Diaz told reporters after his victory over Marius Zaromskis (13-4) on Saturday. “That’s the one fight I’m talking about.”

The potential matchup between St. Pierre and Diaz is very unlikely, with GSP still on contract with the UFC, and Diaz set as the current Strikeforce Champion, but a public war of words can most likey be expected.
